ใช้สำหรับการพูดถึงเรื่องในอดีต
แต่มีกระระบุรายละเอียดให้ชัดเจนลงไปอีกหน่อย ซึ่งจะเป็นการบอกว่า ณ
เวลานั้นๆ กำลังทำอะไรอยู่
เช่น การที่เราพูดว่า "เมื่อวาน
เวลาประมาณ 10.30 ตอนเช้า พวกเขากำลังตีเทนนิสกันอยู่ที่สนาม"
ลองดูเหตุการณืดังต่อไปนี้
Yesterday Karen and Jim played tennis. They started at 10 o'clock and
finished at 11.30.
So, at 10.30 they were playing
tennis.
They were playing = ขณะนั้นพวกเขากำลังเล่นอยู่ ยังไม่เล่นไม่เสร็จ
Was / were - ing คือ past continuous

I was doing something = พูดถึงสิ่งที่กำลังเกิดขึ้น แต่ว่ามันเกิดในอดีต ณ เวลาหนึ่งๆ (เวลา X ) ซึ่งก็ได้ผ่านมาแล้ว . เหตุการณ์ได้เกิดขึ้นก่อนเวลา X แต่ว่ายังไม่เสร็จสิ้น ณ เวลา X ยังดำเนินต่อไป และไปจบเอาอีกทีเมื่อไหร่ก็ได้ หลังเวลา X แต่ไม่ต่อเนืองถึงปัจจุบัน งงไหม ? ถ้าไม่งง แอดมินจะงงล่ะนะ !

This time last year I was living in Brazil. (ถ้าเป็นช่วงนี้ เมื่อปีที่แล้ว ฉันอยู่ที่บราซิล)
What were you doing at 10 o'clock last night?
I waved to Helen, but she wasn't looking.

ส่วนมากแล้ว เราจะใช้ทั้งสองรูปด้วยกันในประโยค ดังตัวอย่างต่อไปนี้
Matt phoned while we were having dinner.
It was raining when I got up.
I saw you in the park yesterday. You were sitting on the grass and reading a book.
I hurt my back while I was working in the garden.
แต่ว่าถ้าเป็นการเล่าเหตุการณ์ต่อๆกันไป เราจะใช้รูป past simple ดังตัวอย่างต่อไปนี้
I was walking along the road when I saw Dan. So I stopped, and we had a chat.
เปรียบเทียบความต่าง

คำกิริยาบางคำเช่น know / want มักจะไม่ค่อยใช้กับ continuous
We were good friends. We knew each other well. (ไม่ใช่ We were knowing)
I was enjoying the party, but Chris wanted to go home. (ไม่ใช่ was wanting)
